About The House of Spinel
A house built around one extraordinary gem.
The House of Spinel is not a general jeweller that happens to stock spinel. We are specialists — a Melbourne-based house devoted entirely to natural, untreated spinel, and to the collectors and connoisseurs who understand why it belongs among the world’s great gems. Our work begins where most end: at the source, with the stones themselves.

Specialists,
not generalists.
Spinel is the only gem we deal in, and that focus is deliberate. A stone this rare, this varied and this widely misunderstood rewards a dealer who has spent years learning to read it — the way chromium lifts a red, the way iron settles a grey, the way a single-refractive gem returns light with a clarity corundum cannot match.
We buy, study and sell one species, and we aim to know it completely — from the mineralogy on the bench to the market at the summit. If you would like to learn it with us, our complete guide to natural spinel is where that knowledge lives.
Our Deepest Expertise
A rare fluency in Vietnamese spinel
Our deepest knowledge lies in the spinel of northern Vietnam. The marble-hosted deposits of Lục Yên, in Yên Bái province, yield some of the cleanest, most luminous untreated spinel on earth — vivid cobalt-blue, soft lavender, glowing pink — and, from the gem gravels around An Phú, a rare salmon-to-sunset orange we have named the An Phu Sunset.
Few houses truly understand this material: how thinly it is mined, how a great stone differs from a merely good one, and why the finest examples surface only a handful of times in a year. That understanding — earned stone by stone — is what we offer collectors. Where Mogok gives fire and Mahenge gives neon, Lục Yên gives a clarity and delicacy of tone all its own; we have spent our time learning to recognise it on sight.
Every fine Vietnamese spinel we handle is, in the most literal sense, one of one.
Our Vision
To see spinel recognised for what it truly is — a natural, untreated gem of rarity and beauty equal to the great coloured stones — and to be the house collectors trust to bring them its finest, most singular examples.
What We Stand For
Our values
Authenticity
Natural and untreated, always. We deal only in spinel exactly as the earth made it — no heat, no diffusion, no enhancement of any kind.
Rarity
One of one. Every loose stone we hold is unique in colour, cut and character; we curate for singularity, never for volume.
Expertise
A gemologist's eye. Hue, tone, saturation and origin — we read each stone with the rigour a fine spinel deserves.
Transparency
Nothing hidden. An independent gemological report accompanies every significant stone, and our pricing reflects the gem, never the story.
Responsibility
Sourced with care. We favour traceable, responsibly-mined material and lasting relationships over anonymous supply.
Stewardship
Knowledge, freely given. Our journal is a growing library of expert guides, because a better-informed collector is the spinel world's greatest asset.
How We Work
Our philosophy
We believe colour comes first, that patience beats haste, and that the smartest purchase is the stone itself — not the label attached to it. Spinel has spent centuries mistaken for ruby and overlooked by a market trained to chase four famous names; we take the longer view.
A great spinel is a quiet kind of luxury: rarer than most of what it sits beside, untouched by treatment, and answerable only to the eye. Our role is to find those stones, to describe them honestly, and to place them with people who will treasure them.
We would rather sell one collector the right stone than ten the merely available.
